Spotlight on Hazel Village
In our Spotlight On series, we’re giving you an up-close look at the Scandinavian-inspired brands we love at Pip and Sox. This week we bring you the cuddly creations of Hazel Village.
Hazel Village is so much more than just a kid’s brand. It’s a whole world filled with magic and wonder. The residents of this world are the cute and cuddly animals who live there in their neat little houses amongst the leafy trees. Happy and free, the Hazel Village toys live in harmony, working together on helpful and kind projects and creating gorgeous gifts for each other.
The motto of the Hazel Village animals is:
“Industry and good cheer, every day and every year!”
The little world of Hazel Village was first brought to life in 2010 when Jane Van Cleef, the creator of the brand, decided to strike out on her own and dive into a new project. Jane, who was 25 at the time, had always had the spirit of a maker and set out to create toys that she would have loved as a child.

Crafted from a love of childood
Fuelled by the inspiration of her favourite childhood toys, crafts, and stories, Jane created her first Hazel Village resident (a tiny Annicke Mouse). From there, she made more cuddly creatures and sold them on Etsy and at Brooklyn craft fairs with amazing results.
“Hazel Village is named after the American Hazelnut tree: a source of delicious nuts, magical divining rods, useful twigs for basketry, and food for caterpillars.”
– Founder, Jane Van Cleef
Hazel Village has grown significantly since that humble beginning, and Jane now has a whole team working with her to create these charming creatures. Together, they operate out of a workshop in Brooklyn, where the brand’s flagship store is also located. On top of the flagship, the label is stocked in over 200 stores worldwide, including right here at Pip and Sox.
Consistently striving for heirloom quality at a reasonable price, Hazel Village prides itself on making stuffed toys that can remain with children as they grow. The cute characters make the perfect snuggly friends for little ones while also appealing to bigger kids as companions for storytime and imaginative play. Eventually, they can become treasured keepsakes to be passed down to the next generation.
As well as creating products that inspire imaginations and empower kids to play at their best, Hazel Village is also now focused on producing its beautiful animals responsibly, meaning they are made from organic cotton.
“The company and the animals have the same core values: we are resourceful, clever, jolly, diligent, and gentle.”
A focus on the little things
Although Hazel Village’s impeccable craftsmanship is undeniably appealing, it’s the brand’s essence, which shines through in its commitment to detail, that makes it so special. The label, which is dedicated to bringing these stuffed animals to life, creates lovely and real dolls’ clothes for its creations. You won’t see a sewn-on shoe or fake button anywhere. Instead, you’ll find gorgeous garments that the Hazel Village friends can share.
Whether a cat, mouse, fox or fawn, the Hazel Village creatures make fantastic lifelong friends for little ones. And, because their features are hand-stitched, they’re soft and safe for babies too.
