How to Create a Charming Play Area for Children
Play is an essential part of any child’s development as it allows them to practice their motor skills, improve their cognitive function, and enhance their imagination. Setting aside a dedicated play area for your child can help encourage them to play creatively.
For you, a dedicated play area for your little one also means less work. When toys are confined to one kid-friendly area, there’s less tidying up to do around the house, which is always a good thing!
How to Create a Charming Play Area
Creating a charming play area for your child needn’t be difficult. First, select the aesthetic or theme you hope to achieve. This could be anything from a Scandinavian minimalist look to a wild jungle zone. Now, all you need to do is pick out essential pieces that fit this theme.
Kids love to draw and colour so including a table in their play area means not having to clear the kitchen table every time you want to sit down and eat . Just pick out one that’s the right size and matches the aesthetic you’re aiming for in the space. Add a couple of chairs so when friends come over they can colour together. A small container of crayons and pens plus a stack of paper will ensure hours of quiet creativity.
Whether your child has started to read on their own or is still enjoying the fun of storytime, a reading nook will make an excellent addition to their play space.
To create a reading nook for your little one, designate an area in your play zone and make it cosy. Add plenty of comfy cushions and soft, cuddly blankets. A cushioned mat, such as a Numero 74 Cotton Futon, can also help keep things comfortable, especially if you have hard floors.
Making the area feel enclosed by placing it in a corner or by adding a canopy tent or teepee can also help your child to feel comfortable and relaxed while reading. Who knows, it may also become their favourite place to nap too.

Floor Play Zone
Although kids will love sitting at their drawing table and snuggling up in their reading nook, active playing will require more space. To provide your child with space to walk, crawl and roll around, consider creating a floor play zone.
To create a stylish floor play zone, choose an appropriate rug, such as one that is soft on little knees, and that feels great to sit on. You can also consider a playmat, like the Bloomingville Mini City Rug, where your child can drive their toy cars along roads and through towns.
One element that mustn’t be overlooked when creating a play area for children is storage. As this play area will be where you child keeps most (if not all) of their toys, it’s essential to have adequate space to store them.
Instead of big, hard and unattractive plastic containers, consider investing in some sweet and stylish hampers and baskets, such as Olli Ella’s gorgeous Neutra Baskets. Not only will they stylishly provide storage, but they’ll also make cleanup a breeze as you can simply drop everything in at the end of the day.
Now that your child’s play area has all the essentials, all that’s left to do is add the finishing touch with special pieces that you know your little one will love.
