Fun Ways to Make the Most of the Weekend Together
For many families the weekends are often filled with sports games, dance classes, and kids parties before you all fall into bed exhausted. But every now and then you get a free weekend with nothing planned – and when those times come around, we think it’s worth making them a little special by spending time together as a family.
Spending time together helps to build relationships between everyone in the family and creates memories that will last. All you need is some fun activity ideas that’ll keep everyone entertained.
Go on a Picnic
A picnic is a sweet activity to do on the weekend and can be fun for the whole family. The kids will love having room to roam around outside while mum and dad relax on the grass will a few delicious nibbles.
For the perfect family picnic, pack a few extra pieces to make the experience more enjoyable. Along with the usual food, drinks and blanket, also bring some comfy cushions to sit on. And don’t forget to pack some fun games and toys for everyone to play with.
Also, be sure to picnic in a spot with some trees or bring a shade umbrella. The Australian sun can be harsh, and there’s nothing like bad heat and sunburn to ruin an otherwise lovely afternoon.

Watch a Sweet Movie
Watching a movie together is perfect for a rainy day or just when you all need some downtime. For a fun family weekend activity, give your home the cinema treatment with a projector and plenty of popcorn to share. Then, make things cosy with a supply of soft cushions and blankets.
Now all that’s left to do is choose the movie. Luckily, there are plenty of fantastic kids’ movies like Lady and the Tramp, Beauty and the Beast, and just about any other Disney classic.
Hit the Kitchen
Baking is a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy together. From measuring the ingredients and sifting the flour to stirring the mixture and spreading the icing, little ones will love feeling like mini master chefs for the day.
Put a sweet spin on your baking and have the family make love heart cookies together. They’ll be a sweet treat as well as a perfect way to share the love in your family.
You may even want to eat them while watching a family movie together.
Take a Bike Ride
In Australia it’s often still warm and sunny during the day right through to mid-Autumn, making a bike the perfect activity to do together. It’s also an ideal opportunity to get out of the house and be active together.
Whether you ride through a park, down the street or around the corner to visit nan and pop, a weekend bike ride promises to put smiles on all of your faces.

Kids love being creative, so let them try their hand at arts and crafts. While the glitter may be a pain to clean up, the smiles on their small faces will make it all worth it.
Little kids might like to practice their drawing and colouring-in with large sheets of paper, while bigger kids can get craft making cards out of cut out shapes and coloured sticky tape.
Or for a weekend of fun, buy a big roll of brown paper from the craft store and run it down the length of a hallway or living room. Let everyone add their own decorations and drawings. You can then cut it up to use as wrapping paper throughout the year – an extra-special gesture when giving gifts to family and friends.
